Falls
Unexpected situations may result in a fall. Do you know steps to protect yourself and others from further falls?
Hopefully, a lawsuit will not ensue when a fall occurred on someone else's property.
Steps after a fall occurred:
- assess patient
- can they communicate?
- ask patient for a statement
- how did the fall occur
- any intervention needed
- evaluate patient
- patient history
- document incidence
Conditions deemed contributory to a slip and fall accident include:
- torn carpeting
- a wet floor that isn't properly marked
- poor lighting
- stairs without a hand railing
- a handicapped-accessible walkway with inadequate handrails
- even a 3" drop in an elevator
